Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre has announced the cast and creative team for August Wilson’s THE GEM OF THE OCEAN.
Directed by Artistic Director Karen Paisley, the production features Sherri Roulette-Mosley (Aunt Esther), Granvile O’Neal (Solly Two Kings), George Forbes (Rutherford Selig) Shawna Peña-Downing (Black Mary) Priest Hughes (Eli), Jerron O’Neal (Caesar Wilkes), and Lewis J. Morrow (Citizen Barlow)
Creative team includes Erin Ray (stage management), Shannon Smith (costume design), John Story (sound design), Karen Paisley (set and lighting design), Elizabeth Bowman (dramaturgy)
Set in 1904, GEM OF THE OCEAN begins on the eve of Aunt Esther’s 287th birthday. When Citizen Barlow comes to her Pittsburgh’s Hill District home seeking asylum, she sets him off on a spiritual journey to find a city in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The ninth work in Wilson’s ten-play cycle that has recorded the American Black experience, GEM OF THE OCEAN is the fourth play produced by MET under Wilson’s American Century Cycle.
