Review: DISENCHANTED at Starlight Theatre

DISENCHANTED, part of the Starlight Theatre Indoors Series, offers an imaginative and adult take on some classic fairy tales. Ten of the most well-known princesses have come together to tell the absolute truth about their stories, their happily ever afters, and what it is really like to be a princess – and they do it with plenty of attitude and style.

The show is done in the style of a musical revue/variety show, with each princess getting to take a turn in the spotlight and share her experiences. Since highlighting the princesses in this way is the only running plotline, there is no fourth wall. Instead, the ladies directly address and engage the audience regularly, even asking for full audience participation at times.

This is not a “princess” show for little girls, or the faint of heart. These princesses are boisterous, sexy, and even a little raunchy at times as they explore the issues of sexism, racism, misrepresentation and expectations in a male dominated culture.

With no set and only a few props, it is up to the cast of six phenomenally talented women to carry the entire show and keep the audience interested. They manage this effortlessly with high energy antics, surprise dance breaks, comedic asides, and flawless characterization.

The lyrics in the songs are surprisingly deep at times. So many great points are expressed that the audience will have to listen closely to catch all the subtle nuances that could easily be lost in the energetic comedy of the show. Two such songs that are especially noteworthy are “Honestly” sung by Ann Paula Bautista as Pocahontas, and “Perfect” sung by Daniella Richards as Sleeping Beauty.

High praise goes to Costume Designer Vanessa Leuck. The costumes worn by the ladies were a perfect blending of their modern personas and classic fairy tale counterparts. Each outfit had the distinctive markers of well-known characters and the grandeur of traditional ball gowns, but with a modern twist that expressed the attitudes and personalities of the women behind the princess stereotypes.

DISENCHANTED is an exciting and energetic show that will get you laughing and leave you thinking late into the night.
