More than 500 people attended The White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center (The J) for the Semifinals of KC SuperStar, a singing competition among local high-schoolers a la “The Voice.” 10 area high school students were chosen as finalists by a three-judge panel of entertainment professionals.
The top 10 will now compete at the Aug. 26 finals, backed by a live band, and hosted by Broadway and television star Megan Hilty. Hilty is a Tony Award nominee known for her role on the television series “SMASH.” She made her Broadway debut as the replacement for Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda in “Wicked” opposite Idina Menzel. Hilty will perform, along with last year’s KC Superstar winner Chloe Puetz.
Those who attend the singing event will have the opportunity to vote electronically to chose the top four. The winner will land a $10,000 scholarship, second place will get $5,000, third will get $2,500 and fourth place gets $1,000.
The KC SuperStar Finals will take place in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College as the annual fundraiser for The J. Proceeds from KC SuperStar help provide transportation, meals, education, camp, wellness programs and the arts to children, families, individuals and senior adults.
