In one word, uplifting. I left the theater last night feeling as if I had been wrapped up in a warm, fuzzy blanket and sat down by the fire with a delicious cup of hot cocoa. It was an unexpected feeling but one I am grateful to have experienced.

CHRISTMAS IN SONG is exactly what the apt title describes. Lauren Bradshaw, Lindsey McKee, Brad Dawdy, and J. Kent Barnhart take you on a Christmas journey with their elegant and simple performance. Some of the songs — selected by Barnhart — were unfamiliar to me, but the execution was flawless. It was refreshing to experience Christmas music that departs from the mainstream, and the stories Barnhart conveys about the songs are interesting, imparting a new depth — an homage to music. Barnhart says at one point, “It doesn’t matter how beautiful the sound is, it’s about the story.” And that is exactly the feeling CHRISTMAS IN SONG leaves you with.

Lovely moments along the way include one where Barnhart addressed the audience and explained how all the performers are parents and that’s why the upcoming songs were chosen. His witty retort: “I don’t have kids, I have actors.” As is typical with this performance, the quick humor then u-turned to depth and beauty as Lauren Bradshaw sang “A Baby Changes Everything.” Her voice bears a beautiful, husky quality and she performs the song with a heart full of authenticity which left me utterly breathless. Another standout moment is the lovely Lindsey McKee’s rendition of “O Holy Night” Her crystal-clear soprano permeated the room.

Quality Hill’s 150 seat theater allows the four performers to intimately address the audience. Georgianna Londre Buchanan’s costumes are exquisite and fit well within the feel of the show. The staff are all lovely and very welcoming. So if you are looking for a relaxing, Christmas inspired date, night out on the town, or want to just go hear some beautiful music and feel all warm and fuzzy, I encourage you to go see this delightful little show.

CHRISTMAS IN SONG plays through December 23rd. For more information visit qualityhillplayhouse.com.
